In Arundhati Roy's The God of Small Things, silence is never a characteristic of the female subaltern,Ammu, whereas it is phenomenally obvious that she has her own voice and desire, which helps her escape socially imposed constraints of caste and gender, finally turning into a subject of desire instead of an object of desire. This article analyzes how Ammu is suppressed in the Indian context through a Lacanian reading of Ammu's personality and personal history. It further reveals the way Roy as an activist,by the use of both gender and caste perspectives, represents Ammu's subjectivity and helps her accomplish her pursuit of desire.
