查理斯·艾略特是美国现代大学的奠基者。他通过逐步推进选修制,使哈佛大学完成了现代化转变,成为美国高等教育的一面旗帜。当美国在从农业社会向工业化社会全面转变之际,美国大学却裹足不前,亟需变革。艾略特洞察时代发展趋势,力倡自由选修,致力于打造独具特色的美国大学——以"自由"教育培养优秀公民,促进社会"民主"发展,引领美国高等教育走上现代化之路。通过研究艾略特及其在哈佛大学领导的自由选修制,我们可以更好地领悟大学必须在教育家的领导下扎根民族土壤、与时俱进的重要性。
Charles William Eliot,former president of Harvard University,was the founder of modern higher education in the US. By establishing the elective system in Harvard,he transformed the school into a modern university and a front-runner of US higher education.At that time,United States was going through the transition from an agricultural country toward an industrial society,but US universities still stuck to the traditional educational model,unwilling to move forward with times. Mr. Eliot followed the trend of times and adapted to changes by establishing elective system in Harvard,aiming at building a university with distinctive American characteristics.He intended to cultivate excellent citizens,promote the democratic development of the US society and modernize US higher education through a truly'liberal'education. This study of Mr. Eliot's education thoughts and the elective system of Harvard University would help us better understand the importance of moving forward with times and maintaining our own national characteristics when developing China's higher education.
