It is held that the essence of poetry lies in metaphor. However, cognitive linguistics believes that metaphor, as one of the fundamental human cognitive mechanisms, is quite common in our everyday use of language. Then, what makes metaphors in poems different? It is the frequent metaphor and metonymy interactions that create the multi-layered aesthetic charms of ancient poetry. In that sense, we can say that the essence of poetry lies in the metaphor and metonymy interactions. In this paper, we analyze the types of metaphor and metonymy interaction in ancient poems by applying and revising Goos sens ' metaphtonymy theory.
