The Madman's Spiritual and Cultural Chain:Personality Analysis of Lin Shu

林纾虽然被视为五四新文化运动和文学革命中的顽固守旧派,但从文化人格上看,他和那些被称为时代"狂人"的"五四文化激进派"一样,也体现出一种"狂者"精神,同样属于中国"狂人"精神文化链条上的一环。只不过与中国近代以来的"动作型"、"铁血型"的狂者有所不同,"畏天循分"的人生信条使林纾更体现出"狷者有所不为"的一面,而"狂狷"与"循分"的融合则造就了林纾晚年身为"道德遗民"的人生方式。

Although considered a diehard conservative in the May-Fourth New Culture Movement,Lin Shu had the same madman's spirit as those radicals of May-Fourth.Actually,they all shared the common madman's spirit which originated Chinese cultural tradition.But different from those hot for Action and Sacrifice during the early modern times in China,Lin Shu showed a tendency of following the traditional rules as a Confucian scholar.The almost contrary characters also made Lin Shu stick to the life as an adherent to morality in the Qing Dynasty at his old age.
