Fifth Chinese Daughter:A Lonely Bridge Between China and the United States

黄玉雪的自传体小说《华女阿五》讲述了华人之家的黄家第五个女儿黄玉雪的成长故事。在她的成长中,白人起了很大的作用,虽然存在种族歧视,但并没有妨碍她的成长。她逐渐把白人的价值观内化,以此反抗中国传统的价值观念,挑战父母的权威,张扬个体,贬抑集体和家庭,最终成为华人归化的典型案例。她美化了美国的主流社会,认同白人的价值观念,而缺乏批判意识;但她同时批判地继承了中国的传统文化。作为一个华裔美国人,中国和美国都成了异国,华人和白人都成了他者,她成了一个孤独的个体。但她仍然试图以写作展示中国文化,让美国人了解中国。

Fifth Chinese Daughter, an autobiography of the author, Jade Snow Wong, tells a growth story of the fifth daughter from a Chinese American family surnamed Wong. In her growth, the white influ- enced her deeply. Although racial discrimination existed, it did not hinder her growth. Gradually she ac- cepted the values of the white and began to resist Chinese traditional values, challenge the authority of her parents and display individuality while depreciate collectivism. Eventually, her story became the typi- cal Chinese case of naturalization. She beautified American mainstream society and agreed on the white values without critical consciousness, at the same time, she critically inherited Chinese traditional cul- ture. As a Chinese American, neither China nor the United States is her own country, Chinese and white Americans became strangers, thus she became a lonely individual. But she still tried to display Chinese culture to help Americans understand China better.
