The Textual Research on Bao Shen-you’s Life and Writings

鲍慎由是北宋后期重要的作家、诗学家、文献学家。据宋人汪藻《鲍吏部集序》、王称《东都事略》及《直斋书录解题》等记载推测,其生年应在1067年左右,卒年最迟不超过1126年。其元祐六年登进士第,后数次遭贬。其交游甚广,少从王安石、苏轼学,与黄庭坚交往甚密;诗歌"高妙清新",反映了北宋后期诗风演变情况。其好藏书,精心校雠前代诗歌,甚受时人肯定。曾为《楚辞》、韩愈文、李贺诗作注,对钱起诗、杜牧文亦有评论。其为杜诗作注,是现存杜诗集注本中文献价值很高的"鲍注"的作者之一。其书法成就很高,受到米芾赞赏。著有《鲍慎由文集》五十卷以及《夷白堂集》,后皆散佚。

Bao Shen-you was an important writer, poetic theorist and documentalist in the late Northern Song Dynasty. According to The Preface to Anthology of Boo La＇bu, Biographical Sketch of the Northern Song Dynasty and The Explanatory Notes on Titles of the Selected Books in Zhi Studio, Bao Shen-you was born around 1067 and died before 1126. Bao was demoted many times after he had achieved the ＂jinshi＂ degree in the imperial examination in 1091. Bao Shen-you had a large circle of acquaintances. He learned from Wang An-shi and Su Shi in his early youth and had a close relationship with Huang Ting-jian. His noble and refreshing poems reflected the evolution of poetical fashion in the late Northern Song Dynasty. Bao Shen-you had a passion for collecting books. His careful collation of former poems was highly praised by people of the time. He made annotations to Songs of the South, Han Yu＇s proses and Li He＇s poems. And he also commented on Qian Qi＇s poems and Du Mu＇s proses. He was one of the authors of Bao＇s annotation to Du Fu＇s poems which had high philological value in existing Du Fu variorum. His achievement in calligraphy was appre- ciated by Mi Fu. The Anthology of Bao Shen-you and Yibaitang Anthology which compiled his works were lost.
