The Diaries of Jane Somers, first published in 1984pseudonymously and separately as The Diary of a Good Neighbor and If the Old Could,is Doris Lessing's representative work that marks her return to realism in the last stage of her literary creation. It focuses on the middle-aged,middle-class career woman—Jane Somers's urban life experience in London of the 1970sand relates how she gradually changes her attitude to life through befriending the senior citizens in her off-work time, particularly Maudie—an over-90-year-old working-class woman.Based on an understanding of the urban lifestyle and its value orientation behind gerontophobia/gerascophobia,this thesis,in an analysis of the female protagonist's journey of transgression, explores the collective identity crisis of old women as a marginalized urban group with a view to reveal the ethical values associated with urban female spaces(esp.of old age)as well as the challenge they pose to the mainstream value system of the western urban world.
