The traditional design of Chinese cheongsam witnesses alternation under the influence of the Western costume culture and the concept of dimensional cut. Cheongsam has been updated with the fashion trend, westernized to meet the foreigners taste and simplified for practical purpose. This essay intends to go through the styling feature of cheongsam of different time periods and aims to reveal the shift pattern by providing an in-depth study of cheongsam＇s tailoring details, structural features as well as its craftsmanship. It is hoped that the comparison of western counture and traditional Chinese costume would be beneficial for understanding and appreciating the essence of the Western design so as to inject new stamina into Chinese traditional design. Through the innovation and renovation, Chinese traditional costume would be valued for its unique stylish charm and Chinese character.
