＂Moderation in all things,＂ my father, dead now over forty years, used to say, ＂a balanced life.＂ It was life advice for me and perhaps ultimate recognition of his own life, at times immoderate in several respects -- gambling, drinking, cigarettes. Moderation and balance： worthy ambitions ... or are they？
