砖雕是古代建筑上的装饰构件,一般用于建筑的大门,照壁,墙面上作为装饰。砖雕对所用的材料有严格的要求,太硬的砖材在雕刻时容易破碎：太软的砖材在雕刻时不能深刻。因此砖雕多采用经过特别加工的水磨青砖,这种青砖泥质经过反复捣炼、过滤,再经过烘烤,打磨,因此软硬适度,便于雕刻。砖雕的雕刻技法多样,主要有平雕,透雕、浮雕、圆雕、贴雕等。在艺术上,砖雕远近均可观赏,具有完整的效果,在题材上,砖雕以寓意吉祥和人们喜闻乐见的内容为主。民间砖雕具有实用和观赏的双重作用。

Brick carving is a component to the ancient Chinese architecture as a decoration on gatehouses or screen walls.The 170 year-old brick carvings from the Shen's gatehouse have been handed down from Shen Shuyong's forefathers.The design of the brick carvings there demonstrates the excellent skills of the artists with patterns of good wishes,and in fact there once lived quite some famous figures in the modern Chinese history.
