Political Practice of the Liberal Intellectuals in Early Republican China: the case with the weekly Endeavor

《努力》周报是20世纪20年代中国自由主义知识分子的政治、文化评论性刊物,他们以此为阵地,阐述自己的政治和良好社会的主张、理念和思想。企图以学者独立身份谈政治、干预政治。《努力》周报力图保持思想和言论的独立性,以及"舆论干政"为以后的自由主义知识分子利用舆论影响政治树立了榜样,他们所体现出的那种"努力干"的精神值得我们借鉴;刊物的停刊说明"《努力》周报"式的政治理想和方法在中国社会里是"不合时宜"的。

The Endeavor was a weekly paper published by in the 1920s in China that featured political and cultural commentaries. It was used by China＇s liberalist intellectuals to advocate their political reformism and advanced ideas. The writers of this weekly tried to capitalize on their status as independent academics to talk about and intervene in politics. Endeavor strived to retain its independent political and intellectual stance and as such has set up an example for later-coming liberal social critics in China. The spirit of public service clearly embodied in their strivings and ＂endeavors＂ are worth learning. The cessation of this publication shows that the kind of political intervention practiced by its writers and organizers was not acceptable to the social milieu of the time.
