Four Types of Merchants in Sanyan Erpai

"三言二拍"是中国古典通俗短篇小说的佼佼者,描绘了众多复杂、鲜活的商人形象。尽管二者表现出的商人形象有许多不同点,但却都刻画了四类具有相同点的商人,即说教型商人、好色型商人、弃儒经商型商人、期盼仕途型商人。于此同时,一定的时代背景与作者的创作观念等,是形成这四类商人的必要因素。

Sanyan Erpai is a series of vernacular short stories of the Ming Dynasty, depicting many com- plex businessmen. There are many similarities among them, who can be categorized into four types character- ized as preaching, erotic, giving up study and aspiring official positions. At the same time, the social back- ground and the authors＇ creation idea is necessary for the formation of the four types of merchants.
