The concept of prehension is the core of Whitehead’s system of thought,the clarification of which is the gateway to understanding process philosophy.The purpose of Whitehead’s metaphysics is to seek new source of the meaning of life in western traditions to address the scientific and cultural crisis of Europe.This goal is achieved through rediscovering the stage of philosophical ideas beginning with Descartes and ending with Hume.By creatively interpreting the works of Locke,Berkeley and Leibniz as well as the nature poetry of Shelley and Wordsworth,Whitehead exhibits a living picture of nature,thus completing the transformation from mechanism to organism.Study on the development of the concept of prehension reproduces this thinking process.It is the new perspective to study process philosophy based on the concept of prehension to unfold Whitehead’s system of thought.
