In the light of the axiological connotation of Lao Tzu's Dao,namely to follow the way of being natural and simple, this paper sets out to expound the true purport of Lao Tzu's famous assertion of carrying out the 'unspeakable instruction'.In doing so,it also tries to summarize the features of Lao Tzu's art of language which fully presents itself in his carrying out the 'unspeakable instruction' through speaking, and to reveal the inner cleft both in his way of reasoning and the doctrine of Daoism in general. And all this, according to this paper, may provide us with a new perspective in which to understand Daoism's viewpoint of language, the commencement of Confucianism, and the relationships between the two great intellectual schools.
