A Probe into Modal Responsibility in English News Based on Appraisal Theory

以评价理论在新闻英语中表现出的责任情态作为切入点,着重于新闻社论中作者责任情态度的把握及其代表的人际利益关系,对责任情态在新闻英语中的策略性应用展开多角度讨论,并得出结论:责任型情态可作为评估理论的分支继续展开研究,它在新闻报道中不同量值的体现有着极大的舆论价值和社会影响力。

With modal responsibility of Appraisal Theory embodied in English news as a breakthrough point, paper focuses on the writer＇s measure of modal responsibility and interpersonal interests he/she repre- sents, especially that of editorials. Multi-perspective discussion is developed centering on the strategic application of modal responsibility in English news. Finally, it comes to the conclusion that further re- search on modal responsibility is expected to be conducted as a branch of Appraisal Theory, and dif- ferent values of modal responsibility embodied in news report have its social power which exerts a pro- found influence upon public opinions.
