This essay investigates the political subtext of Blood Meridian, that is,the response to American involvement in Vietnam War.McCarthy, apart from revealing the hypocrisy of state ideology which lies behind "Manifest Destiny"in the Westward Movement, weaves the subtext to criticize America's imperialist behavior of involving in Vietnam War.He also foresees the phenomenon that the spirit of conquest in the Westward Movement has been appropriated by state ideology to justify American political affairs since 1970s.Vietnam War is the best footnote to such a phenomenon.McCarthy,by using the violent and bloody West as a metaphor for American soldiers' violent acts and horrible killings in Vietnam War,warns Americans from being deceived by state ideology. These ideas, which reflect the author's intense condemnation of imperialist ideology of America, have profound realistic significance.
