1928年到1929年间,上海发生了一起富家小姐黄慧如与男仆陆根荣私奔的事件,被时人称为黄陆案。20世纪二三十年代的上海,正是大众传媒与市民文化空前繁盛的时期,这一罕见的主仆恋情很快成为沪上各大小报刊大肆渲染的对象,并成为以牟利、媚俗为宗旨的出版商以及海派戏剧的绝佳题材,甚至电影公司、烟草公司也从中窥到了牟利的契机,跟风炒作,私人领域、个人的情爱与身体成为大众文化消费的对象。与媒体炒作相对的,是知识精英们对黄陆案的讨论与言说。黄陆案被旧派人士看作是"尊卑不分"的风流案、奸案,却被新派人士演绎为符合当时潮流的自由恋爱,在相关的论述中,阶级、革命、女权、自由、平等等话语被广泛运用。时至今日,以黄陆案为原型的沪剧与评弹仍在上演,但其人物形象与故事情节已"面目全非"。

In 1928,an eye-catching event had taken place in Shanghai： A w ealthy Miss named Huang Huiru eloped w ith her manservant named Lu Genrong.Ow ing to the unprecedented prosperity of the mass media and culture in Shanghai during the 1920s to 1930s,the event,titled as＂The Case of Huang-Lu＂at that time,w as w idely propagandized by the media and quickly spread from mouth to mouth.Moreover,it became the topic for the publishers and Shanghai Drama,money-earning and vulgarity being their ultimate goal.In addition,film companies,as w ell as tobacco companies,follow ed to make profits from the event.Therefore,it is easy for us to arrive at the conclusion that any privacy,including love affairs,could be treated as the subject of the mass cultural consumption under the influence of Shanghai commercial media at that time.Quite contrary to the media,the intellectual elites had different opinions tow ards the event.On the one hand,conservatives criticized it as an＂amorous affair＂regardless of inferiority and superiority;w hile liberals honored it as a kind of freedom on love affairs,w hich symbolized the development of the times.Among their heated debates,terms,such as class,revolution,feminist right,freedom,equality,and etc.,have been w idely employed.Now adays,based on the story of ＂The Case of Huang-Lu＂,plays presented by Shanghai Drama and Pintan（storytelling and ballad singing） have still been put on the stage,but the contents,as w ell as the plot and the figure are all in a complete change.
