As an imperial diaspora, Nadine Gordimer has depicted in July’s People a white family---the Smales, who have been forced to go exile because of the civil war. This novel was mostly interpreted from perspectives of the dissolution of white center and the exchange of identity and power. To explore the geographical displacement and cultural dislocation experienced by the characters from the perspective of “exile” helps to discover the great difficulty in ethnic fusion of South Africa and the hypocrisy of the declaration of liberal-ism. In addition, the discussion about losing and rebuilding the “homeland” reveals the author’s confidence in building a new multicul-tural South African homeland.
