This is the essential of the strategies for protecting and utilizing the Western Hangzhou Wetlands （WHW）. WHW is the important urban wetlands, possessing significances at multiple levels and aspects and functioning as the foundation and guarantee of developing the harmony between people and nature in Hangzhou city. Due to the contemporary development of agriculture and urbanization, WHW has been suffering from area shrink, environmental pollution, water system break, landscape fragmentation and context extinction. The basic principle for protection and utilization of WHW is basing on ecology, prioritizing protection and rationalizing utilization. The strategies follow a general idea that the protection follows ecosystem approach and the utilization obeys ecosystem conservation.
