Throughout history, the Crested Ibis was a very common species of bird found in the East Asian continent. Before the middle of the 20th century, they existed in large numbers in Japan, D. P. R. Korea, Russia and China. But in the 1970s, they became totally extinct in aforesaid countries except in Yangxian County in China's Shaanxi Province. Affected by the changing environment and the presence of humans, the species that had been living in the world for more than 25 million years nearly disappeared in less than a century, becoming one of the most endangered species of bird in the world.
