Western Sonnet May Come from Chinese Metrical Poem

十四行诗是诗歌百花园中的一朵奇葩。一般认为,这一诗体源于意大利,后来传到法、德、英等国并逐渐成为一种世界性的诗体。从形式到格律,西方十四行诗都与中国律诗有相似之处。从时代来看,中国律诗盛于公元8世纪左右,而最早的意大利十四行诗出现于13世纪。公元8世纪至13世纪正值连接中国与西欧的阿拉伯帝国时期,当时的西欧文化远比近东文化落后。在近东的希腊诗歌和古代阿拉伯诗歌中迄今未找到十四行诗,而中国律诗当中却有大量的十四行之作。如果西方十四行诗与中国律诗真有什么关系的话,那么,前者很有可能源自后者,而完成这一文化传递的使者很可能就是阿拉伯人。

The sonnet is regarded as a cute flower in the garden of poetry. This universal poetic form is commonly thought to begin in Italy and later spread to France, Germany, England and so on. In both form and rhyming the sonnet is similar to Chinese metrical poem which is in flourish in the 8th century while the earliest Italian sonnets appear in the 13th century. The period from the 8th to 13th century is the Arabian Empire era when western European culture is much more backward than that of the Near East. The Empire is a bridge between China and Western Europe. During the same period, neither Greeks nor Arabs develop sonnet -like poems, while in China there are many 14 -line metrical poems. If there is some relationship between the western sonnet and Chinese metrical poem, it is likely that the former comes from the latter. And the transmission task is likely to be done by the Arabs.
