Objective To observe the effect of alginate dressings on reducing the peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC) insertion sites infection in preterm infants. Methods Total 79 preterm infants meet PICC condition were divided into the observation group( 31 cases) and control group(48 cases). In the observation group, 2.5 cm×5.0 cm alginate dressings which folding 3 times was used to cover the insertion sites and fixed with 3M dressing, and the alginate dressings was replaced by 0.5 cm x 0.5 cm alginate dressings 48 h later;the dressings was changed 7 days later. In the control group, instead of alginate dress- ings, the sterile gauze of was used to cover the insertion sites. At 48 h,7 days, the insertion sites infection or bleeding was recor- ded. Results The incidence of insertion sites bleeding in the observation group was lower than that in the control group, and the differences was statistically significant( P 〈 0.01 ) ;while the incidence of insertion sites inflammation in the observation group is lower than that in the control group, the differences was statistically significant ( P 〈 0.05 ). Conclusion The alginate dressings can effectively reduce PICC insertion sites bleeding and infection in preterm infants.
