Lexical Cohesion and Communicative Purposes of Genres

依据Halliday和Hasan提出的衔接理论,用复现的词汇衔接方法,并结合Swales提出的体裁语轮分析法,以国际权威期刊System中的一篇应用语言学学术论文的摘要为例,分析词汇衔接模式能否体现摘要这一体裁的交际功能。研究表明,词汇的选择受制于体裁,对词汇衔接模式的分析能够更好地帮助人们了解体裁的交际目的。

This article analyzes the communicative purposes of the abstract of one article from System in the field of applied linguistics. This analysis is based on the combination of cohesion theory proposed by Halliday and Hasan and genre analysis theory put forward by Swales. Using reiteration method in lexical cohesion, the author analyzes the lexical cohesion among the moves and between the moves. And the author further offers the concept of lexical chains through which the communicative purposes of genres can be achieved. This study shows that the choices of the lexical items are restricted by genres and the analysis of lexical cohesion could help people understand the communicative purposes of genres better.
