Objective: To explore the relationship between maternal serum trace elements and neonatal birth weight. Methods: The serum contents of magnesium, calcium, iron, copper, and zinc in 160 pregnant women were traced and detected by inductively couple plasma mass spectrometer ( ICP - MS) during the first, the second, and the third trimesters of pregnancy ; the neonatal birth weight was fol- lowed up and measured, the correlation between maternal serum trace elements contents and neonatal birth weight during the third trimester of pregnancy was analyzed. Results: The serum contents of calcium, iron, zinc, copper, and magnesium in pregnant women of different tri- mesters of pregnancy were within normal ranges. The content of calcium decreased slightly with increase of gestational weeks, the content of iron decreased significantly during the second trimester of pregnancy ; the contents of iron, zinc, and magnesium decreased significantly with increase of gestational weeks ; the content of copper increased significantly with increase of gestational weeks ; the contents of serum calcium, iron, zinc, and magnesium in pregnant women during the third trimester of pregnancy more than 75 mg/L, 460 rag/L, 6. 12 mg/L, and 34 mg/L respectively were helpful to increase neonatal birth weight. Conclusion : The serum levels of trace elements in pregnant women of different trimesters of pregnancy change to a certain degree, the pregnant women should supplement calcium, iron, zinc, and magnesium rea- sonably according to gestational weeks.
