Conflict and Integration: The Basic Characteristics and Social Role of Theatre's Culture in Modern Shanghai (1843-1937)

自1843年开埠以来,随着西方租界区的设立,国际移民给近代上海带来了政治、经济、文化等多方面的变革,其中,戏剧文化的变革与转型是非常引人注目的。西方娱乐方式传入上海的历史过程,也是传统娱乐观念与西方新式理念从对抗到融合的过程。当西方新式的理念与本土传统观念相遇时,虽然会引发冲突,但仍是以包容、开新为主态势。这也构成了海派文化海纳百川、开新、包容,同时又保持本土文化特色的城市文化精神之一。

Since Shanghai opened its doors to trade in 1843, and with the establishment of the Concessions, foreigners have brought changes in politic, economy, culture and other fields, to recent Shanghai. Among those changes, the change and transformation of entertainment was really striking. Besides it analyzes the process, within which the relationship between traditional entertainment concept and modern Western philosophy changed from confrontation to integration. It also illustrates the basic characteristics and the social influence of modern Shanghai theatre and its entertainment culture. When modern philosophy of the West confronted with traditional concept of local, there might be conflicts; however, the final result will be integration. This also constructs one of the spirits of urban culture in Shanghai, exceling at innovation and integration, while keeping the distinctive local culture feature.
