As the main role in Bajin＇s novel The Cold Night, WANG Wenxuan has a particular character, ＂a good old man＂, written in the novel many times, actually is the point between the initial character and tragic fate of WangWenxuan. This unique description combines his kindness with cowardice, which points out the most important reason why he finally died tragically. Ex- cept for the character he owns, there are lots of key points that contribute to the death of ＂a good old man＂. The figure of WANG Wenxuan as well as the origin of his tragic fate is analyzed. The universality of the old intellectuals who lived in a special time of China is shown.
