《红楼梦》中数字成语的英译研究——基于杨、霍英译本的译例分析

On the Translation of Numeral Idioms in Hong Lou Meng——An analysis on Yang Version and Hawkes Version

本文在对《红楼梦》中数字成语的考察基础上,较为深入地分析、比较了杨、霍英译本中数字成语的翻译译例。分析发现,杨、霍译本中对数字成语主要采取意译法和直译法,直译法译例中还可分为完全直译和部分直译等。对数字成语的翻译方法的考察从另一角度佐证了两位译者的归化与异化翻译策略的使用倾向。

This paper explores the translation approaches of Chinese numeral idioms in the Chinese classic novel Hong Lou Meng based on an analysis on Yang Xianyi and David Hawkes＇ translation versions. The paper concluded that literal translation and free translation are the most common translation strategies employed. However, to serve the end of translation, literal translation strategy sometimes is not strictly observed. Such analysis provides evidence to support the previous claim of Hawkes＇ domestication orientation and Yang＇s foreignization orientation in translation.
