Objective To evaluate the efficacy and safety of policosanol combined with low- dose atorvastatin for hyper-lipidemia in elderly patients with diabetes mel itus. Methods Sixty four patients aged≥80y with diabetes mellitus and hyperlipi-demia were assigned to receive policosanol 10mg and atorvastatin 10mg (combination group, n=32) or atorvastatin 20mg(control group, n=32). Blood lipids, liver function and creatine kinase changes were measure before and after treatment and compared between two groups. Results After 16 weeks of treatment, the reduction of total cholesterol(TC), low density lipoprotein choles-terol(LDL), triglycerides(TG) in combination group was more marked than that in control group(P〈0.01). The total effective rate in combination and control groups was 96.875%and 71.875%, respectively(P〈0.05). The adverse reactions in two group were mild and there was no significant difference in adverse effects between two groups (P〉 0.05). Conclusion Policosanol combined with low dose atorvastatin is more effective in lowering blood lipids than conventional dose atorvastat for elderly diabetic patients with hyperlipidemia.
