西方设计范畴中,"建筑精神"与"展示精神"的分野是内在的,它缘自西方文化内部日耳曼民族与罗马民族的差异与纠葛。"建筑精神"更多地体现出了日耳曼文化的"民族性"和"本土性";而"展示精神"更多地表现出了罗马文化的"世界性"。在美国,"展示精神"甚至能让建筑这样极端强调质量的人造物,变成一种"秀";而在欧洲大陆,"建筑精神"却能赋予一切设计可靠的属性,包括与"秀"密切相关的平面设计。
the Social root of distinction between Spirit of Construction and Spirit of Show is the distinction between the Germans and the Romans. Spirit of Construction coincides with the Germans' aboriginality, while Spirit of Show with the Romans' cosmopolitanism. In the states, such a quality-oriented stuff as construction could be rendered as a show within the Spirit of Show, and in the continental Europe, such a show-oriented product as graphics as credible stuff within the Spirit of Construction.
