The sustained and rapid development in smart grid and its related techniques is promising to guarantee the promotion of smart home and smart cities. In addition, it is a fundamental issue in building green, harmony, stable, and friendly societies, which is in line with the national energy and security strategies. The aim of this article is to present the basic concept, critical functions of smart grid, and to analyze the applications of wireless communications in smart gird. We also shed lights on the role of wireless communications enabled smart grid in smart home and smart cities.
