This essay originally published in English as a chapter of the The Wiley- Blackwell Companion to Chinese Religions,edited by Randall L. Nadeau( Malden,MA: Wiley- Blackwell,2012),offers a general introduction to Chinese popular religion and its role in Chinese history,culture,and society. It considers the notion of popular religion,introduces its cosmology and theology,and examines its religious specialists and modes of transmission. The second half of the essay provides a social contextualization of Chinese popular religion by examining its relations with family,local community,and state,and by discussing the nature and functions of voluntary religious associations within popular religion.
