On Liu Xie's View on Literary Style Based on“Style and Natural Endowments”

刘勰的文学风格观集中体现在《文心雕龙·体性》篇。刘勰在《体性》篇中论述了文学作品的风格与作家才性之间的关系,并提出"才气学习"四个因素构成了作家的创作个性,正是这些因素的综合作用,决定作家创作个性和风格的形成。他把文学风格归纳为八种基本类型,既剖析了每一种风格的特点,又举出具体作家实例予以佐证。刘勰试图通过作者才性批评联系作品批评,并提出作家与作品相结合的创作才性风格观,形成了系统的文学风格观。

Liu Xie＇s view on literary style is well manifested in ＂Style and Natural Endowments＂ in Dragon-Carving and the Literary Mind. He expounds the relationship between literary style and the author＇s natural endowments, and proposes that ＂talent, endowment, cultivation and learning＂ are four factors that determine an author＇s individuality of creation, under the influence of which the author＇s character and style are shaped. He divides literary style into eight basic categories and he analyzes the characteristics of each style and citing examples of specific authors as evidence. Liu Xie tries to connect endowment criticism with work criticism, and comes up with an endowment style of creation that integrates the author and his works, establishing a systematic view on literary style.
