Gold has played an important role in the monetary system since the first international monetary system in human history-gold standard system-is established. The Bretton Woods System pushed the dollar to the foreground of the international monetary system replacing gold to become the primary reserve asset. As a monetary role, gold has gradually drifted into the background after the collapse of the Bretton Woods System, while the dollar still dominates the international monetary system. The paper reviews the evolution of the international monetary system, and explores the role of gold in the reform of the international monetary system. The paper analyzed the present situation and prob- lems of the international monetary system, and concluded that gold still plays an important role in the international mo- netary system. The analysis offers guidance to the reform of the international monetary system.
