Over the period between the 1890sand the 1930s,American cities were fascinated with the ideal of verticality. The first wave of skyscraper constructions coincided with the emergence of American modernist art and literature. This essay studies the skyscraper as a central symbol of capitalist modernity and explores how skyscrapers changed the perception of the city residents and shaped the aesthetic sensibilities of the modernist literature. This essay argues that there is an interaction between skyscrapers and American modernist literature, between aesthetics and urban planning.
