In this study, metaphors used by 119 second-year English majors in their compositions have been collected in order to explore their beliefs about foreign language learning. The metaphors the students used can be divided into six categories: skill learning metaphors, path experiencing metaphors, nurturing metaphors, digesting metaphors, communicating metaphors and building metaphors. These metaphors show that the students have generally positive beliefs about foreign language learn- ing. Their beliefs reflect the nature and features of SLA and manifest the personal experiences of the students as well. To some extent, cultural features are also shown in the metaphors.
