This paper addresses the character type of vagabonds represented by Peter Jenkins in Cranford, Vagabonds live a rebellious and unregulated life, which can be interpreted as a revolt against and a recurrence of the suppressed desire of the mainstream cultural value of the middle class. The innate reckless and enterprising spirit qualifies vagabonds for being an im- portant force in the colonial enterprise of the British EmPire. They have a substantial impact on the shaping of Victorian cul- ture.
