Dance is a short novel written by Akutawagw Lyunosuke, which tells a story ot a chance meeting between a Japanese noblewoman and a French officer, Miss Akiko and Mr. Pierre Lotty, in Rokumekan's dance. Through the dialogues between Miss. Akiko and Mr. Pierre Lorry, the writer describes Japanese' s blind worship to the West during that period, and satirizes the Europeanized Japanese diplomacy. The unexpected ending of the story deepens the theme : what the West is in Japanese' s eye is quite uneven in awareness and unequal in spirit with what Japan is in the Westerners' s eye. This article tries to analyze the novel' s theme and connotation through the Rokumekan' s diplomacy.
