Dance is a short novel written by Akutawagw Lyunosuke, which tells a story ot a chance meeting between a Japanese noblewoman and a French officer, Miss Akiko and Mr. Pierre Lotty, in Rokumekan＇s dance. Through the dialogues between Miss. Akiko and Mr. Pierre Lorry, the writer describes Japanese＇ s blind worship to the West during that period, and satirizes the Europeanized Japanese diplomacy. The unexpected ending of the story deepens the theme ： what the West is in Japanese＇ s eye is quite uneven in awareness and unequal in spirit with what Japan is in the Westerners＇ s eye. This article tries to analyze the novel＇ s theme and connotation through the Rokumekan＇ s diplomacy.
