The technique for observing the fluorescence emission of oil-bearing sands under ultraviolet irradiation has been widely used in oil exploration for many years. But this method lacks accuracy and is harmful to human eyes. The oil monitoring instrument introduced in this article can be calibrated point by point with 16 standard sample tubes commonly used in oil fields. High sensitivity photomultiplier tubes are used to detect fluorescence. The data obtained are processed by microcomputer to determine the relationship between the intensity of fluorescence and the oil content of oil-bearing sand. The new method is accurate and convenient, and has been put into practictical use in Bohai, Jidong, Shengli and Qinghai oil fields with satisfaction.
