With a selected range of landmark events and changing circumstances experienced by the 1970s-born generation, this paper analyzes the interaction between structural social change and the formation of the 1970s-born intellectuals during the shift from planned to market economy. Social change exerts an uneven impact on the 1970s-born generation. Architects born in the 1970s had the opportunity to undergo the transformation from ＇the art of the craftsman＇ to ＇the art of the artist＇. Idealism and rationalization are twin gifts that social structures brought to the 1970s-born generation in different historical periods. This generation sustains the tension between ideal and reason during social change.
