This article offers a critical introduction to a recently completed building, Gyanak Mani Visitor Centre, designed by Li(Brian) Zhang, Chief Architect of Atelier TeamMinus. Yushu is a highly regarded religious centre for Tibetans. Its significance comes mainly from the Gyanak Mani stone stacks, the world's largest Tibetan Buddhist cairn. Gyanak Mani Visitor Centre primarily utilized recycled building material from aftermath of the 2008 earthquake and local stone masonry, while also adopted local building techniques. Gyanak Mani Visitor Centre consists of a square building with a courtyard in the centre, and 11 observation decks surrounding it, which correspond to the 11 historical sites around the site. Gyanak Mani Visitor Centre characterizes modern architectural style with a regional sense, it also attempts to form conceptual connections with the culture, history, religion, space and time of the entire region.
