In the recent earthquakes which occurred in USA and Japan, damages to many buildings resulted from the brittle fracture of beam-column connections. Brittle fracture is mainly due to variables of welding, and it is also affected by some factors of structure. In this paper the affecting factors of brittle fracture are analyzed with the actual examples of fracture. The study shows that brittle fracture of welded steel structure beam-column connections started at the stress concentrated zone. Finally, the ways of preventing brittle fracture are discussed.
