医疗服务提供者们必须准备好面对两个人口统计学变化：人们对寿命的预期增加以及我们正在变胖这个事实。各个年龄人群中，包括高龄人群中的糖尿病患病率都在提高。65岁以上的糖尿病患者的微血管和大血管并发症的发病率更高，导致住院率增加、医疗费用和护理费用增加，对社会照顾的需求也增加。治疗老年糖尿病患者是一个挑战，不仅因为低血糖的风险，过于激进的治疗也会导致并发症增加。
