The Discourse Functions of Bridging Anaphora in Stream-of-consciousness Discourse:A Centering Approach

本文在向心理论的框架内,探讨意识流语篇中语段内与语段间名词短语和省略零形代词搭桥回指中心在语篇信息组织和传递中的语篇功能。在语段内,名词短语用于详述、扩展和增强信息流,也可用于解歧,突出、转换主题和标示修辞对比关系。在语段间,其功能为标示参与者视角转换和担当语篇切分标记。省略零形代词的语篇功能为激活和维系主题、标示主观视角、蕴涵特殊情感、态度和性格特征。两种搭桥回指的语篇功能界定为构建适合意识流语篇的向心理论模型,特别是对搭桥回指生成算法的构建提供了计算语篇语言学理据。

This paper aims to explore discourse functions of backward-looking center realized as bridging anaphora between adjacent utterances in information structuring in stream-of-consciousness discourse. Bridging full noun phrases serve different functions both within and across segments. Within segments, they are used for elaboration, extension and enhancement of information flow. They are also used for disambiguation, thematic prominence, as a topic shift and a signal of a rhetorical relation of contrast whilst across segments, they serve to signal alteration of participants＇ perspectives and as segmentation markers. Elliptical zero pronoun backward-looking centers are used to activate and maintain topic, signal subjective point of view, and implicate special feelings, attitudes and charac- ters. The specification of discourse functions of bridging anaphora provides discourse-oriented computational linguis- tic rationales for the construction of centering model accommodating to the bridging anaphora generation algorithm in stream-of-consciousness discourse.
