西西的第一部中篇小说《东城故事》出版于1966年,当年她28岁。之后,她出版了几部长篇小说、短篇小说和散文集,最新的短篇小说就是2006年出版的《白发阿娥与其它》(《玫瑰阿娥的白发时代》收录其内)。从青春的茂盛走到衰弱,时间从来都没有停下脚步,这种感慨对于一个作家的写作是有其影响的,也助长了西西叙述时间的功力。于是,西西考察了时间留给人类生命的痕迹,让小说的视角跟随时间的脚步:过去、现在、未来,三个向度来去,融合了西方的时间观,阐述时间在人类生命里施予的魔术。

Xi Xi＇s first novella The Story of East City was published in 1966 when she was 28 years old. Thereafter, she had printed an amount of novels, short stories and proses. Her latest published short story, White-haired Ah E and others （where The Old Age of Rose E is included）, was released in 2006. Time keeps moving with her shift from prime exuberance to feebleness. Such lament enriches her dexterity in narrating time due to its capability of affecting and shaping a writer. Hence, she examines the indication and vestige of what time has left for life and mankind with the intention of allowing the point of view in her novel to pace on par with time and hovers around the dimension of past, present and future. Her consideration associates with the Western time concept which allows her to expound the magic that time has cast to life.
