Language Changes Caused by Language Contacts: The Changes of Dongxiang Language

东乡民族的交际工具主要是东乡语,东乡语属阿尔泰语系蒙古语族。东乡语长期处于汉藏语系语言的包围之中,不仅语言结构发生了变化,而且主要功能也在发生着变化,语言转用就是语言功能变化的一种。据我们调查,在东乡族自治县的24个乡镇中,四分之一的人口已经转用了汉语。主动的文化同化、经济条件等是造成东乡民族语言转用的原因。

Belonging to tile Ahaic Mongolian language family, Dongxiang language is the main communicative tool among Dongxiang people. Due to the long-time contacts with other ethnic groups, both the structure and function of this language have changed. According to the author＇s investigation, l/4 residents in 24 towns of Dongxiang autonomous county have turned to use Chinese. One of the main reasons for the language transferring is the active cultural assimilation.
