On Imitating the Ancient Masterpieces in Calligraphy

临古指临写古代经典碑、帖、墨迹的方法和过程,是学习书法的必经门径,但人们对临古这一重要学书方式的认知,还存有认识上的误区。通过对书法临古相关理论的研究,并结合自身实践,对临古概念、临古的四大特性、临古的方法、临古的目的等问题予以系统阐述,可促进书法实践。

By ＂ imitating the ancient masterpieces＂ we mean the process and ways of imitating classical tablets on tomb- stones, scrolls and genuine calligraphic works. But misconceptions still exist of this important way of learning calligraphy. This paper, through a study of the relevant theories in the imitation of ancient works in conjunction with my own practice, attempts a systematic explication of the concept of ＂imitating ancient masterpieces＂ , its four prominent features, its method- ology and its goals in order to promote calligraphic practice.
