An Optimistic View on the Fate of Traditional Chinese Opera

戏曲的衰落是社会急遽转型造成人们的价值观、道德观与审美观发生巨大变化而带来的。随着社会转型期的即将结束与民族优秀传统文化主体地位的复归,具有开放品性的戏曲仍会赢得偏爱集体性娱乐活动的国人的青睐。不过,戏曲要焕发青春,须系统地改革,而改革的关键在于能否打造出具有时代性、民族性与程式性特征的新的声腔音乐。

The decline of traditional Chinese opera was the result of a rapid social transformation caused by the changes of common values, morality and aesthetic standards. As the period of social transformation is coming to an end, excellent cultural traditions will be back and become stronger. The traditional Chi- nese opera, with the open character, will be popular among the Chinese people who prefer the collective entertainment. However, rejuvenating the traditional Chinese opera sometimes means more or less rein- venting it. The key of innovation is to create a new vocal music which has the contemporaneity , locality and opera features.
