近代都市苦力劳动收入较低,二十年代在各业工人中基本处于偏低的位置,三十年代除上海苦力普遍低于当地工人平均水平外,南京、武汉、重庆的都市苦力的收入基本处在当地平均位置。除临时性开支外,上海、南京、武汉、重庆的都市苦力基本上略有节余,但又必须将劳动收入的绝大部分用于生活方面。都市苦力的饮食"大都极恶劣粗糙",居住简陋,衣着破旧。
