Breeding activities of caudate animals are usually constrained by environmental factors, especially by climatic factors such as temperature, relative humidity, and rainfall etc. Red knobby newt ( Tylototriton shaufing) is a typical montane caudate adapt to Yunnan mountainous environment. This study aimed to clarify the key climatic factors, which influenced the breeding activities of red knobby newt, through field investigation of the number of active newt and analysis of climatic factors. The results showed that daily newt numbers in active were negatively related to daily air temperature, and positively related to daily relative humidity and rainfall. However, results from partial correlation and multiple regression analysis indicated that breeding activities of the red knobby newt were more closely related to relative humidity and rainfall. The newts increased their breeding activities when air temperature decline and humidity increase, which were caused by rainfall, therefore, rainfall was the key climatic factor which influenced the breeding activities of the red knobby newt. Breeding activities of the red knobby newt kept consistent with the rainfall rhythm was an adaption to Ynnnan mountainous environment.
