Contrast between Chinese and English Public Signs and Pragmatic Equivalence Approach

由于中西方文化传统、思维方式、语言结构和语用习惯的不同,汉英两种语言的公示语有很大差异。将汉语公示语译成英语时,译者要遵循语用等效原则,树立跨文化意识,加强语言修养,培养敏锐的语感,尽可能地避免语用差异引起的信息障碍,以保障跨文化交际的有效进行。

There is a big difference between Chinese and English public signs due to their different culture, way of thinking and language structure, etc. When translating Chinese public signs into English, we should adopt Pragmatic Equivalence approach, set up the cross-cultural awareness, strengthen the cultivation of language and the keen sense of language, in order to avoid the communication barriers caused by pragmatic differences and en- sure the effective cross- cultural communication.
